The sixth Best Sommelier in America competition was held on April 16th and 17th at New York City’s Jumeirah Essex House. The event attracted the nation’s leaders in the hospitality and beverage industries to compete and judge, and a group of spectators with a demonstrated interest in wine. The competition is a series of exams designed to test service & blind tasting skills, food & wine pairing acumen, and advanced theoretical knowledge of wine. The two-day event culminated in the Awards Gala on Sunday, April 17th, with the results of the competition announced and the inaugural Art of Service Award presented to Chef Eric Ripert and Maguy LeCoze of Le Bernardin. The Best Sommelier in America Award was given to Alexander LaPratt of Bistro Moderne, NYC. The Gala dinner and Awards presentation began with a Savor Your Senses performance by concert pianist Elaine Kwon, paired with a special wine chosen by CEO of American Sommelier, Andrew Bell. A one-of-a-kind dining experience of five great dishes was presented, each produced by a different New York City chef, artfully paired with five exceptional wines.
